Description of BQ24230
Targeted towards portable applications with minimal space, the bq24230 series of devices are highly integrated Li-ion linear chargers and system power-path control devices.
The devices support charge currents between 25 mA and 500 mA and can be powered by either a USB connection or an AC adaptor. Low-cost, unregulated adapters are supported by the high-inputvoltage range with input overvoltage protection.
The bq2423x can satisfy the USB-IF inrush current specification thanks to the precision of the USB input current limit and the start-up sequence. Additionally, the input dynamic power management (VIN-DPM) guards against the charger being crashed by USB sources that are poorly made or improperly set up.
Dynamic power-path management (DPPM), a characteristic of the bq24230, powers the system while concurrently and independently charging the battery. The DPPM circuit supplies the system load continuously while monitoring the charge current by reducing the charge current when the input current limit causes the system output to drop to the DPPM threshold.
This feature lessens the number of charge and discharge cycles on the battery, permits correct charge termination, and makes it possible for the system to function even when the battery pack is damaged or missing.
Additionally, even with a completely depleted battery, this allows for quick system turn-on. When the adapter is unable to produce the peak system currents, the power-path management architecture also enables the battery to supplement the system current requirements, allowing for the usage of a smaller adapter.
Three phases?conditioning, constant current, and constant voltage?are used to charge the battery. An internal control loop tracks the temperature of the IC junction throughout all charge phases and lowers the charge current if the internal temperature threshold is reached.
The charge current detection and charger power stage operations are completely integrated. High-accuracy current and voltage regulation loops, charge status indication, and charge termination are all features of the charger function.
Using external resistors, the input current limit and charging current can be programmed.
