Description of LM2931CMX/NOPB
When powering 10mA loads, the LM2931-N positive voltage regulator has a very low quiescent current of 1mA or less. The LM2931CMX/NOPB is the appropriate regulator for standby power systems due to this distinct feature and the extremely low input-output difference necessary for proper regulation (0.2V for output currents of 10mA).
Applications include systems requiring up to 100mA of output current, CMOS and other low power CPU power supply, and memory standby. The LM2931-N and all controlled circuitry are protected from reverse battery installations or two battery jumps because they were initially developed for automotive uses.
The regulator will immediately switch off to protect internal circuits and the load during line transients, such as a load dump (60V), where the input voltage to the regulator may momentarily exceed the stipulated maximum operating voltage.
The introduction of a temporary mirror image has no negative effects on the LM2931-N. There are other common regulator characteristics like short circuit and thermal overload protection.
A fixed 5V output with a 3.8% tolerance for A grade, or an adjustable output with an ON/OFF pin, are both available in the LM2931-N family. The TO-220 power package, the DDPAK/TO-263 surface mount package, and the 8-lead SOIC package are all available for both versions. The TO-92 plastic box also comes in the fixed output variant.
